Revised Nitrates Action Programme 2011 -2014
The Nitrates Action Programme (NAP) which relates to Northern Ireland aims to improve the use of nutrients on farms and improve water quality throughout Northern Ireland. Some changes have been made to the NAP for the next four years from 2011 to 2014. The key changes relating to spent compost are summarised below.
Spent Compost land application and storage.
With effect from 31 October 2011, spent compost will be subject to a closed spreading period from 31 October until 31 January. Until 31 December 2012, spent compost may be stored in a field heap where it is to be applied, but for no longer than 180 days. After that date the compost heaps are only permitted for not longer than 120 days.
Full details of all measures can be found on the NAP Guidance Document 2011- 2014 and at www.dardni.gov.uk and www.ni.-environment.gov.uk
