Ant & Dec to make their debut at Balmoral Show
Mushroom growing is a very important industry in Northern Ireland but one that’s a bit of a mystery to most people. That’s why father and son team of Ant and Dec McKeever, along with the rest of the Northway growers will be on hand during the week to introduce Balmoral Show visitors to the fascinating world of fungi as part of the Northway Mushrooms stand, from 16th – 18th May.
Now officially classed as a superfood due to their high levels of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, high protein and low calories, mushroom growing is an art as much as it is a science. Growers carefully control their cultivation through temperature, atmosphere control and compost making and mushroom growing is becoming one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture industries there is!
Visitors to the Balmoral Show will be invited to enter a mushroom tunnel and go on a mushroom trail which will provide children and adults with an opportunity to find out about mushrooms in a fun and hands-on way. From making the special compost to learning how mushrooms are grown to finding out what goes on in a pack house, the mushroom journey will be explored and explained.
Declan McKeever, a member of Northway Mushrooms, explained:
“Mushrooms are one of the least understood foods in supermarkets but they’re one of the healthiest and greenest, and Ireland is fantastic at growing great tasting, high quality mushrooms. Everyone who comes into our mushroom tunnel will get the chance to taste delicious mushrooms and discover why they’re so good for you. As well as Anthony and myself, there will be storyboards, videos and other mushroom growers on hand to answer any questions.”
